In the early hours of Monday morning, a severe traffic incident on the Bryte Bend Bridge leading into West Sacramento resulted in a fiery spectacle and major commuter delays. California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that the accident involved four vehicles and was first reported around 7:30 a.m.
The collision sequence started when a semi-truck struck one automobile, which set off a series of rear-end collisions. This impact caused two vehicles to ignite, sending a plume of black smoke rising from the bridge, which was clearly visible in footage captured by the CBS13’s tower camera.
Emergency response teams arrived swiftly at the scene of the accident, where they successfully extinguished the vehicular fires. The incident, while dramatic, fortunately did not lead to any reported injuries. Law enforcement officers were present to secure the scene and begin preliminary investigations into the cause of the chain-reaction crash.
The aftermath of the collision affected traffic significantly. Westbound lanes of the Interstate 80, especially through the Natomas area towards West Sacramento, were congested as a consequence of the accident. In response to the emergency, officials closed two lanes to allow for the safe movement of the fire and rescue service, leading to extended delays throughout the late morning commute.
