At approximately 4:49 p.m. on Friday, responders were alerted to a vehicular accident on the Ashby Avenue on-ramp to eastbound Interstate 80 in Berkeley, which resulted in one individual being hospitalized. The incident involved a silver Toyota Camry and reports to the California Highway Patrol suggested a possible shooting preceding the crash.
The victim was promptly transported to a local hospital following the collision, as confirmed by the California Highway Patrol. There were mixed accounts about the cause of the injuries sustained by the individual, and whether they were a result of the accident itself or related to the alleged shooting prior to the crash.
An investigation is underway as the California Highway Patrol works to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident. Initial speculations about the incident being a fatal shooting have been dismissed as inaccurate. “We are receiving conflicting information regarding the severity of the injuries. At present, we cannot confirm if the injury was due to the crash or a gunshot,” stated Andrew Barclay, a CHP spokesperson.
The California Highway Patrol continues to examine the scene and gather evidence to derive a clearer picture of the events that led to the unfortunate series of occurrences. Authorities are reaching out for witnesses and anyone with relevant information to come forward to assist in the investigation.
