SACRAMENTO, CA (May 31, 2024) – In an early morning incident on Friday, the Sacramento Police Department responded to a severe hit-and-run accident involving a pedestrian on 16th Street. The victim, identified as 32-year-old Tyler West Vandehei, sustained critical injuries during the collision.
The event unfolded around 1 a.m. when Vandehei was struck by a vehicle whose driver then fled the scene without stopping to render aid or wait for authorities. Emergency responders rushed Vandehei to a local hospital; however, his injuries are so severe that he is not expected to survive.
Investigators quickly sprang into action, leading to the identification and apprehension of 41-year-old Joe Johnson, a Sacramento resident, believed to have been driving at the time of the incident. Johnson was arrested and is being held at the Sacramento County Jail on charges of felony hit-and-run among other offenses.
The circumstances surrounding the collision are still under investigation, as authorities work to establish the full sequence of events that led to this tragic occurrence. Such hit-and-run incidents are significantly challenging, given that the drivers involved typically flee to escape the repercussions of their actions. Nonetheless, when caught, these suspects face serious legal consequences.
