Fatal Collision on Highway 99 Claims Pedestrian’s Life Near Hatch Road

MODESTO, Calif. — A pedestrian fatality occurred on Highway 99 near Modesto on Tuesday afternoon when a man was struck by a vehicle as he attempted to cross the highway, state authorities confirm.

Around 3:30 p.m., California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers responded to an incident involving a pedestrian who had attempted to cross from the east shoulder of Highway 99 to the center median near Hatch Road. Reports indicate the man was hit by a northbound Volvo sedan as he pushed a bicycle onto the roadway.

CHP’s preliminary investigation suggests the pedestrian unexpectedly entered the path of the oncoming vehicle. The driver of the Volvo, who remained unharmed, was unable to avoid the collision. In the wake of the accident, first responders transported the injured man to the hospital, where he was later declared deceased.

Following the accident, traffic was impacted as two lanes of the highway were closed to facilitate the initial phase of the investigation. Officials have yet to determine whether substance use played any role in the incident and have stated that further details are pending the ongoing investigation.

The identities of those involved have not been released at this time, and no further information is currently available regarding the circumstances of the crash.
