DAVIS — A harrowing incident was captured on dash camera footage when a motorist collided head-on with a California Highway Patrol (CHP) vehicle in Sacramento on Wednesday, according to authorities.
The incident occurred along Interstate 80 in Davis as two CHP officers completed a traffic stop. While their patrol car was parked on the freeway’s shoulder, an oncoming driver traveling in the opposite direction struck them head-on.
The released footage from the CHP’s Valley Division shows the severity of the crash, with the errant vehicle becoming briefly airborne before overturning.
Following the impact, both the patrol car and the wrong-way vehicle were left with significant front-end damage. The CHP officers sustained moderate to serious injuries but were discharged from the hospital within hours of the collision.
The motorist who caused the crash also incurred minor injuries. Authorities confirmed that the incident was not due to impaired driving but was an intentional act by the driver, who is now facing charges and has been detained.
Earlier that same day, another accident involving a CHP car took place on Highway 99 in South Sacramento. The multi-vehicle collision resulted in minor injuries; however, no hospitalizations were necessary.
