22-Year-Old Woman Fatally Struck in Pedestrian Accident at I-5 and Hwy 50, Sacramento

Sacramento, CA — A tragic accident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, May 19, 2024, claiming the life of a 22-year-old woman. The victim was struck by a vehicle on the northbound Interstate 5 on-ramp to the Highway 50 portion of the Capital City Freeway, in the vicinity of the Upper Land Park area.

At approximately 12:40 AM, California Highway Patrol officers were dispatched to the scene, where they discovered the pedestrian, Ayanna Akilah Thomas. Despite immediate medical attention upon their arrival, Sacramento Fire Department personnel pronounced Thomas deceased at the scene.

The driver, who was operating a white Toyota at a reported speed of 65 mph, survived the incident unscathed. According to her statement to the authorities, Thomas unexpectedly stepped in front of the vehicle, and she was unable to avoid the collision. The force of the impact caused significant damage to the front end of the Toyota, including the bumper, windshield, and side mirror.

Following preliminary evaluations, the CHP reported that neither alcohol nor drugs were contributing factors to the cause of the accident, and no arrests have been made as of yet. Investigations into the crash continue as officials seek to determine the full circumstances surrounding the event.
