U.C. Berkeley Student Fatally Injured in Weekend Car Crash

LOS ANGELES — In an early morning tragedy on Saturday, 19-year-old Eloi Vasquez, a University of California, Berkeley freshman and member of the men’s soccer team, was the pedestrian fatally struck in a car accident on the Interstate 10 freeway in Los Angeles. Vasquez had been attending a fraternity party at the University of Southern California’s Tau Kappa Epsilon chapter and was last seen departing the event alone, mentioning he wished to take a walk.

The incident took place approximately one mile from the USC campus, and Vasquez was identified as the victim on Monday by Los Angeles Police Department officials. LAPD spokesperson Officer Tony Im confirmed that coroner’s investigators had determined Vasquez was the individual involved in the collision that occurred around 2:25 a.m. A substantial reward had earlier been offered in hopes of a safe return after Vasquez was reported missing following the fraternity gathering.

Officer Im reported that Vasquez’s family has been deeply affected by the sudden loss of their loved one and has requested privacy during this extremely difficult time. Local authorities continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the accident and have not released further details surrounding the cause of the collision. The stretch of freeway where the accident occurred is known for heavy traffic flow and visibility issues during early morning hours, factors which may have contributed to this tragic event.
