A fatal collision occurred early Sunday in Newhall, resulting in the death of one individual. According to California Highway Patrol (CHP) officials, the incident took place around 2 a.m. on the northbound side of the Golden State (5) Freeway at Weldon Canyon Road.
The authorities arrived on the scene to find the accident involving a sedan, a big rig, and another vehicle. Upon their arrival, officers discovered the severely damaged sedan wedged beneath the trailer of the big rig with a pickup truck at the rear. Reports from a news videographer on the scene depicted a dire scenario, with the victim’s body beside the wrecked sedan.
The CHP identified the deceased as 34-year-old Clay Rodriguez. The County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner’s office confirmed the identity, though Rodriguez’s city of residence was not listed.
In response to the crash, the CHP issued a Sigalert at 2:16 a.m., closing all but the fast lane on the northbound freeway at the Weldon Canyon Road off-ramp, causing significant traffic delays in the area. The collision happened shortly after another incident nearby, where a vehicle had reportedly rolled over the K-rail barrier within a construction zone at 1:54 a.m. Emergency medical services were dispatched to evaluate the driver for potential injuries.
The chain of events effectively disrupted the early morning traffic flow on one of the region’s busiest freeways.
