In South Los Angeles, a pursuit of a theft suspect by the Los Angeles Police Department ended tragically when a bicyclist was fatally struck during the high-speed chase early Wednesday morning.
The incident occurred around 6 a.m. after LAPD officers initiated a chase of a vehicle linked to a theft at East 48th and Central Streets. Despite police attempts to stop the suspect’s car, the driver sped off, leading to a chase within the Central-Alameda neighborhood.
During the attempt to flee from the police, the suspect collided with a bicyclist near the intersection of 45th Street and Hooper Avenue. The impact was part of a catastrophic sequence of events that led to the suspect’s vehicle striking multiple parked cars and ultimately flipping over.
The suspect was able to extract himself from the wreckage and attempted to continue his escape on foot before being apprehended by the police officers.
Detective Meghan Aguilar of the LAPD commented on the incident, detailing that the suspect was detained after the crash and emphasizing the gravity of the decisions made during a police pursuit. LAPD personnel also clarified that their vehicles had not made contact with the suspect’s car or any other vehicle during the chase.
