Multiple injuries were reported following an 11-vehicle pile-up late Saturday night in Camarillo, officials said. The incident occurred on Highway 101 near the Camarillo Springs Road exit.
The California Highway Patrol said the collision was initially reported as a wrong-way driving incident resulting in a head-on crash. Subsequently, the chain-reaction crash involved nine more vehicles.
Luis Ocampo Cardoso, a 24-year-old from Santa Barbara, was identified by authorities as the driver of a 2008 Honda Civic, which they believe ignited the sequence of events leading to the multi-vehicle accident.
Officials indicated that alcohol might have been a significant contributing factor to the accident. Cardoso has since been taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence.
The northbound section of Highway 101 was closed for several hours following the crash but has since been reopened.
